Last year I posted the best p2p software clients and here again I've listed the world's most popular BitTorrent sites. At the start of 2012 The Pirate Bay continues to pull in the most visitors, followed by Torrentz and KickassTorrents.

This list is based on traffic rank and reports from Compete and Alexa, though we are all aware that Alexa isn't perfect and that Compete has plenty of flaws, but putting the two services to use at the same time on similar niche proved worthwhile.

So here we are, a compiled list of the 10 most-visited torrent sites at the start of the new year.

1. The Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay (commonly abbreviated TPB) is a Swedish website that hosts magnet links, which allow users to share electronic files, including music, computer games and software, via BitTorrent. The Pirate Bay bills itself as "The world's most resilient BitTorrent site" (as of 2012, "The galaxy's most resilient...") The Pirate Bay is currently ranked as the 78th most visited website in the world and 20th in Sweden by Alexa Internet, has over 5.5 million registered users and, as of February 2012, hosts more than 4 million torrent files. According to the Los Angeles Times, The Pirate Bay is "one of the world's largest facilitators of illegal downloading" and "the most visible member of a burgeoning international anti-copyright or pro-piracy movement".

2. Torrentz

Torrentz is a Finland-based[2] meta-search engine for BitTorrent that is run by an individual known as Flippy. It indexes torrents from various major torrent sites such as yourBittorrent and offers compilations of various trackers per torrent that are not necessarily present in the default .torrent file, so that when a tracker is down, other trackers can do the work. It was the second most popular torrent website after The Pirate Bay in 2010[3], and it currently has a traffic rank of 145 on Alexa.

3. KickassTorrents

Founded in 2009, KickassTorrents is one of the youngest sites in the list, and this year it moved up to the top 3. Responding to the increasing worries about domain seizures, the site moved from its kickasstorrents.com domain to kat.ph a few months ago. The site continues to innovate and release new features every other week, and it currently ranks 257 on Alexa.

4. IsoHunt

IsoHunt is a BitTorrent index with over 1.7 million torrents in its database and 20 million peers from indexed torrents. With 7.4 million unique visitors as of May 2006, isoHunt is one of the most popular BitTorrent search engines. Thousands of torrents are added to and deleted from it every day. Users of isoHunt perform over 40 million unique searches per month. On October 19, 2008, isoHunt passed the 1 petabyte mark for torrents indexed globally. The site is the third most popular BitTorrent site as of 2008. According to isoHunt, the total amount of shared content was more than 13.44 petabytes as of September 29, 2011.

5. BTjunkie

BTJunkie was a BitTorrent search engine operating between 2005 and 2012. It used a web crawler (similar to Google) to search for torrent files from other torrent sites and store them on its database. It had nearly 4,000,000 active torrents and about 4,200 torrents added daily (compared to runner-up Torrent Portal with 1,500), making it the largest torrent site indexer on the web. During 2011, BTJunkie was the 5th most popular BitTorrent site.

6. ExtraTorrent

ExtraTorrent is one of those robust torrent indexes that doesn’t make the news very often. Compared to last year the site has moved up a spot and is now the 6th most popular torrent venue.

7. Demonoid

Demonoid is a website and BitTorrent tracker created by an anonymous programmer (supposedly of Serbian origin) known only by the pseudonyms "Deimos" and "Zajson". The website indexes torrents uploaded by its members. Demonoid.com was ranked the 538th most popular website overall in December 2010, according to Alexa. Demonoid's torrent tracker had an estimated three million peers in September 2007. The site had over 252,427 torrents indexed as of May 3, 2009 (torrents uploaded prior to August 4, 2005 were removed to free server resources).

8. EZTV

Unlike the other sites in the top 10, TV-torrent distribution group EZTV is a niche site specializing in TV content only. Despite its fair share of downtime this year, EZTV has managed to get a spot in the top 10 for the first time in its six year existence.

9. Bitsnoop

BitSnoop is another newcomer that gained a large audience this year. This didn’t go unnoticed by the RIAA, who filed a complaint at the U.S. District Court of Columbia and obtained a subpoena to reveal the identity of BitSnoop’s owner a few months ago.

10. 1337x

1337x is also new to the top 10, and focuses more on the community aspect than some competitors. The site’s owners say they started 1337x to “fill an apparent void where it seemed there was a lack of quality conscience ad free torrent sites with public trackers.” Its 10th place this year proves that they’re getting the success formula right.

The Pirate Bay Says Goodbye to (Most) Torrents on February 29

The Pirate Bay has confirmed that all torrent files being shared by more than 10 people will be deleted on February 29. The decision is causing a small panic among the site’s users, but in reality little will change as all files will remain available through magnet links. The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that this is merely a “step forward in technology” and confirmed that the site is here to stay.

 

For half a decade The Pirate Bay has been the leading BitTorrent site, but soon its users will no longer be able to download .torrent files.

The first step in this direction will be taken on February 29, the Pirate Bay announced today.

Instead of deleting all torrent files at once, the Pirate Bay crew will start with all files that have more than 10 peers. This is to guarantee that people will still be able to download less popular files, which tend to start slower through magnets.

While there are fears that this is the end of The Pirate Bay, nothing could be further from the truth. For users of the site the upcoming switch is expected to go smoothly.

People will be able to download all files as usual, but instead of using a .torrent file downloads will be initiated through a magnet link. The actual content of the .torrent file will then be downloaded from other people instead of the Pirate Bay’s servers.

Although it might take a little longer for less popular downloads to get started, all files will remain available. Also, users will still be able to upload .torrent files, which will be converted into magnet links by The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that the transition to a magnet site is “a step forward in technology,” and one that will make the site more resistant to being shut down.

Without torrents it takes less bandwidth to host a Pirate Bay proxy site which are used to circumvent ISP blockades in countries like Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, the Pirate Bay will become much more portable and thus easier to move around.

How easy it is to carry a copy of a torrent-less Pirate Bay became apparent last week, when a user reduced the entire site to 90 megabytes – small enough to fit on a tiny thumb drive. The Pirate Bay team likes the idea of a “portable” backup of the site and told TorrentFreak that they are considering releasing an official version in the future.

It’s quite remarkable to see how The Pirate Bay has transformed in recent years. The site is no longer hosting a tracker, and soon .torrent files will be entirely replaced by magnet links. Despite these changes the iconic file-sharing site is picking up new users every week.

The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that users can be assured that they have no intention of going anywhere in the near future. With or without torrents, the site is here to stay.

BTJunkie Shut down

 

BTJunkie was a BitTorrent search engine operating between 2005 and 2012. It used a web crawler (similar to Google) to search for torrent files from other torrent sites and store them on its database. It had nearly 4,000,000 active torrents and about 4,200 torrents added daily (compared to runner-up Torrent Portal with 1,500), making it the largest torrent site indexer on the web During 2011, BTJunkie was the 5th most popular BitTorrent site.

Features

BTJunkie indexed both private and public trackers using an automatic web crawler that scanned the Internet for torrent files. Cookies were used to track what a visitor downloaded so that there was no need to register in order to rate torrents. The ratings and feedback given by people were used to help filter and flag malicious torrents uploaded to the website.

MegaUpload Responded to MasterCard Cutoff

A few days ago the Recording Industry Association of America made an effort to force MasterCard to cut off payments to cyberlockers like MegaUpload. Now MegaUpload is responding on this news.

Things over blocking infringing websites are currently heating up between the MPAA, RIAA, and a number of sites accused of facilitating copyright violation. A few of those websites host large files, allowing people to download them as a side bonus of saving bandwidth costs for some companies. Meanwhile, some accuse such websites of duping consumers into paying for illegal content, and the RIAA is one of them, trying to force MasterCard to block payments to MegaUpload.

While the entertainment industry is claiming that payment system had come to them on its own will to cooperate, MegaUpload also made a statement in respond. There it wonders since when payment processors are making an effort to become the legislature of our time and decide what is right and what isn’t, instead of the elected governments. The hosting service representative pointed at the example of WikiLeaks as the beginning of new era, asking where it will end. In fact, consumers may end being unable to settle their broadband provider bill by MasterCard, because their carrier of choice may profit from copyright violation, which is literally nonsense.

MegaUpload admitted that it is watching the situation with interest, but since the major part of its revenue comes from advertising, the decision to cut them off payment systems would have a limited effect on its operations.

In fact, the US entertainment industry has yet to try to litigate the company, as it would indeed be hard, considering that MegaUpload has a copyright complaints system in place. Currently the service can boast more than 100 million registered users and more than 45 million daily visitors. Moreover, employees of around 70% of the world’s largest companies possess accounts with MegaUpload. This means that the site hosts more than a billion legal files, including documents, pictures and backups. In other words, the service is sure that if MasterCard decides to turn against it, it will be the payment system, not a hosting site that faces a problem.

Well, it will be quite interesting to watch the unfolding events in the forthcoming weeks should these tensions keep rising.

BitTorrent Released New Useful Apps

BitTorrent’s Apps studio introduced VLC media player application to its users, which allows them one-click streaming of files from their favorite BitTorrent client. In addition µCast allows users create list of files, called TorrentCasts, available for sharing with others.

BitTorrent Inc. has announced a number of new applications for both BitTorrent and uTorrent clients, saying that it will allow users to do what they couldn’t before.

The first innovation is a VLC player application, enabling you to automatically display the torrents that you have downloaded in a single list, which allows to easily play each of them via the VLC media player. The player is widely known as the one playing each and every file type currently existing, including disc images having extension .iso. This means that when you click on a file, there’s almost no chance to get that annoying dialog which asks you to find the relevant program to play it – VLC just knows. Thus, this program is a perfect match to different file types existing in the BitTorrent ecosystem. Besides, BitTorrent Inc. claims it to keep with the most valued qualities and be light and easy to use.

Then comes µCast, enabling users to create RSS feeds, also called TorrentCasts, of their own torrents in order to share them with others. The way it works is quite simple: you create a feed by just selecting the files you are willing to share. Then, your TorrentCast link’s recipients simply load it into their own BitTorrent application and get able to access any file from the feed. In addition, the TorrentCast is password protected in order to prevent illicit editing of your list by your recipients. Meanwhile, your recipients are able to add and edit files on the list if you provide them the password.

At the same time, µCast can be used as part of BitTorrent’s effort to help musicians reach P2P users, providing them with a very convenient way to deliver their songs or films to their fans. It can be made just as it is described above. The only exception is that the artist first has to convert their material to a torrent, which is not too difficult, even if sounds a little technical.

These were not the first useful apps the company released this year: the Apps SDK for uTorrent were introduced this mid-summer in a bid to allow third party developers to create and add their own applications offering new features and services.

BitTorrent Exclusive TV-Series Went Further

“Pioneer One”, a TV-show that was created for and made possible by P2P users, appeared to be extremely popular earlier this year – about a million users have downloaded the pilot episode. Despite the fact that it was created and distributed exclusively at BitTorrent, the innovative model couldn’t go unnoticed by TV-insiders: the series won an award for “Best Drama Pilot” at the New York Television Festival. Now, the second episode is already released, and 2 more are promised to follow in the forthcoming weeks.

Six months ago filmmakers Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith decided to set themselves up with quite a challenge: after they finished a script for the new TV-series called “Pioneer One”, instead of offering it to traditional TV-companies, the creators made a decision to fund and distribute the film online.

And they did it! The duo cooperated with the VODO BitTorrent distribution platform for distribution and promotion, and managed to collect the first $6,000 for shooting the pilot episode, which was eventually released in the early summer via VODO and quickly gained an amazing audience.

After hundreds of thousands of P2P users had viewed the show, they decided to donate money for future episodes: the donations scaled to another $20,000 in just 2 weeks and went on increasing until it was enough to shoot more episodes of the 1st season. The show creators realized that they had to do more than one episode at a time in order to make it cost-effective and timely, so they took time to prepare and managed to start shooting in fall.

Three more episodes were shot in October, and the first of them has already been released on VODO. Of course, just as the pilot episode, this one is available for downloading for free. Soon two more episodes will be released, and the team hopes to gather enough funds to complete the first season, which will have 7 episodes in total.

“Pioneer One” relies entirely on the BitTorrent community, so the release of the new episode is promoted by lots of P2P partners, including being bundled with new installs of uTorrent client. It will be curious to watch how the public will pick up the new episode. While the creators have high hopes, they still realize that the success of the pilot won’t be matched so easily. However, they believe that the 2nd episode is a step above the pilot.

Applications To Replace LimeWire

With U.S. District Judge having issued an order to P2P service LimeWire to cease its operations, many ex-LimeWire users are now searching for a viable alternative.

Although LimeWire claims it is going to come back as a subscription-based “ecosystem” providing better access to their whole music library, it’s still unlikely to have much appeal for its former users. Therefore, those may consider it convenient to get an overview of the most popular P2P application’s alternatives available.

BitTorrent

The most popular way of file-sharing, BitTorrent cuts files down into smaller pieces to enable thousands of users to share the same file simultaneously. The option is very useful for sharing large files. Unlike other file-transfer protocols, this one is designed to work best with the number of users interested in a specific file. BitTorrent is able to support around a 1,000 times as many downloads as HTTP protocol.

Usenet

This is one of the oldest and perhaps safest computer networks that are still used. Usenet was first created over thirty years ago by a couple of Duke University graduates, who wanted the program to post messages as a public bulletin board system. Consumers download files from Newsgroups, which sometimes demand a nominal monthly fee. Its main advantage is the offer of faster download speeds and, at the same time, a greater level of safety and security.

How to Use Windows 7 Without Activation

Most of you might be aware of the fact that it is possible to use Windows 7 and Vista for 120 days without activation. This is actually possible using the slmgr -rearm command which will extend the grace period from 30 days to 120 days. However in this post I will show you a small trick using which it is possible to use Windows 7 without activation for approximately an year! Here is a way to do that.

1. Goto “Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories” . Right click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator“. If you are not the administrator then you are prompted to enter the password, or else you can proceed to step-2.

2. Now type the following command and hit enter

slmgr -rearm

3. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Once restarted the trial period will be once again reset to 30 days. You can use the above command for up to 3 times by which you can extend the trial period to 120 days without activation.

4. Now comes the actual trick by which you can extend the trial period for another 240 days. Open Registry Editor (type regedit in “Run” and hit Enter) and navigate to the following location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

5. In right-side pane, change value of SkipRearm to 1.

6. Now you will be able to use the slmgr -rearm command for another 8 times so that you can skip activation process for another 240 days. So you will get 120 + 240 = 360 days of free Windows 7 usage.

BREIN Boss and Pirate Party Leader Start a Twitter Fight

Everyone knows that Twitter can serve as a great tool to keep all people updated on what’s happening in your life, or to get some support and to pass on interesting material. However, this extremely popular micro-blogging system can also serve as a great tool to launch a fight between individuals that are on different sides of the “war on piracy”.

One of those starting the event was BREIN, the Dutch anti-piracy outfit that closed down more than a thousand BitTorrent websites in the Internet. Besides, it managed to single-handedly bring MiniNova to its knees. Whatever it does, it differs from its counterparts like IFPI be the fact that it is willing to comment on its anti-piracy actions.

Meanwhile, on the opposing side of the war on piracy there are organizations like the Pirate Party. This political party has its roots in Sweden, but is currently operating in more than thirty countries all around the globe, including The Netherlands, which is a home country for BREIN. The Pirate Party even recently participated in the general elections there, though without much success.

Samir Allioui leads the Dutch Pirate Party today, after having been a leader of the Pirate Party International, an umbrella organization for all Pirate Parties throughout the world. He thoroughly watches the local media for the discussions relating to the party’s issues (piracy) and is usually not too shy to respond to the thoughts he doesn’t approve of.

That was the case when Samir Allioui responded to the column of Dutch newspaper De Pers, explaining why sharing copyrighted content is wrong. In terms of this discussion he alerted BREIN’s boss Tim Kuik to his article on Twitter. The conversation started between the two leaders, with the content being quite interesting, predominantly consisting of words “bullshit” and other wise replies. On the second day the conversation went on with different accusations, including the Pirate Party accusing BREIN of abusing the legal system in favor of the music industry, and the latter arguing that it just asked the courts to uphold the law.

Everyone understands that both sides don’t share the respect for each other, but are still fighting in public on Twitter. Meanwhile, they would rather throw as much mud as they can than come just an inch closer to agreeing.

January 21^st- The Pirat eBay

We wanted to party. And we wanted you to pay for the beer. So we auctioned a night of partying at eBay. Buyer stood for all expenses.

January 28^th

We put up an auction on ebay.
The winner would get a trip to stockholm (which he/she would pay for) and take the pirate bay crew out on dinner and drinks (which the winner would also pay for) and to top it off we would give (for free!! :D ) the winner a tshirt which said "I paid a lot of cash to get drunk with The Pirate Bay crew and all I got was a copy of this lousy t-shirt ... and a hangover". The auction was won for $8 100 USD by some guy in the UK.

March 12^th

The swedish national TV came up with a super cool idea to raise young swedes interest in politics. A reality show about 6 contestants who's goal is to generate opinion in favour of their ideas. One of them, Petter Nilsson announced that he would donate $6200 to us if he won. Guess who won!? :) With the money, we bough two new servers. Thanks Swedish TV!

April 1st

At april fools day TPB announces that the site has been raided by the swedish branch of MPA. Since we in Sweden have an 8 hour advantage to USA many americans didn't get the joke.

May 31

Due to some nasty lobbying from hollywood and threats of WTO sanctions against Sweden, 30 police officers raid our server hall. Seizing almost 200 servers (15 of those belonged to us) from the isp, taking dna samples from 3 of our guys, yup it's very much like a crappy hollywood flick. However...

June 2^nd

...the site is back up within 3 days and the sites traffic is sky rocketing! We actually doubled our visitors thanks to the raid. Some journalists even asked us if we had orchestrated the raid to get more traffic. It's a great idea but we have to give all the cred to the MPAA. Thanks guys!

June 3^rd - The Police Bay

After Hollywood and the US government initiated the raid against our isp, and since the site was back up again after only 3 days, we wanted to make a bit of fun of them.

June 5^th

We release some stats in the blog about our recent downtimes: Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days

June 18^th- The Phoenix Bay

Like the phoenix bird, The Pirate Bay will always rise again.

July 25^th

In the south of Sweden, the artist Lars Wilks has declared a nation of his own called Ladonia. It's basically a pile of rubbish, but when we heard that there was a "country" inside Sweden that didn't have any internet connections, we called for action! "The Armed Coalition Forces of the Internets" (ACFI) declared war on Ladonia and only promised to retreat if Ladonia installed internet connections (which ACFI offered to pay for). But Ladonia resisted long and hard and the pirates fell back... for this time.

August 21^st

Steal this Film is released! This was a documentary about the international copyfight and featured pretty looking guys like anakata, tiamo and brokep! It was really well done and was seen by thousands from all over the world. It was (of course) distributed here on the bay in various formats.

September 19^th- Talk Like a Pirate Day

October 8^th- Party Aftermath

So we had a party. It got messy. We didn't feel like cleaning it up, so we put up an ad on the front page.

October 11^th- Pirate Bay + WESC = <3

WESC wanted to try out the best distribution channel on the Internets. We're it.

November 14^th

We added the TV section with nicely ordered tv shows. All the properly named shows (Like South.Park.S09E12) goes in there automagically!

November 20^th- Lamont

Lamont, a great swedish pop rock band, put their new single "Rather Do It" on the bay.

December 11^th

Perspektiv Broadband (a tiny swedish ISP) blocks it's users entrance to the russian site allofmp3.com We're not that fond of the russian site, but we really despise internet cencorship. So to put some pressure on Perspektiv Broadband we block their users from our site! Of course it's not an action towards their users, but a way of putting some pressure on the ISP. Lots of lots of users switches to other isp:s and Perspektiv Broadbands support line is listening to complaints for 2 weeks, until they give up and remove the blocking.

TPB recieves an email from Dreamworks about a torrent for the movie Shrek 2. Anakata kindly replies with: "As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe. Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here." And ends the reply with: "It is the opinion of us and our lawyers that you are ....... morons, and that you should please go sodomize yourself with retractable batons." This marks as a turning point in the P2P history as previous pirates have been either submissive or evasive to the threats.

October

The Pirate Bay becomes a separate group to focus 100% on the site. Piratbyrån continues the copyfight in a more intellectual manner.
