French Statistics: 69% File-Sharers Will Stop Over HADOPI
This kind of strange statistics can be found floating in the web, originated from 20 Minutes.fr, a French media outlet. It says a research was carried out, finding out that 69% of file-sharers would choose to quit their illegal activities due to introduction of “three-strikes” legislation in France. However, after studying the statistics, this figure seems to be very misleading.
The media outlet runs a story about the research, which asked people if they gave up file-sharing under the threat of being disconnected of facing the fines up to 1,500 euros. Apparently, 69% responded positively to this question, while another 77% pointed out that they would prefer to monitor their network in case they felt it’s at risk.
Here comes the uncertainty of that second figure. It’s unclear what kind of risk is meant here – malware, hacking or file-sharing. But that’s just the starting point where the credibility begins falling apart. There’s no information on who was asked in the research or what the other results of it are. When trying to click on the links provided by 20 Minutes.fr, one isn’t directed towards the real survey data – in fact, it’s unable to locate the information at all. That’s not a good sign, as there has been a precedent before, when Canada faced the same type of statistics from foreign record studios arguing that the country was a real pirate nation. However, it turned out to be merely cherry-picked information, leaving anything not going along the intended outcome aside.
Still, it’s hard to judge what kind of circumstances influenced this particular study so far, but it’s clear that the research is at least strange and highly questionable, if only two figures are revealed from the whole study, while the rest of them are kept in secret.
In addition, international precedent proves that in fact stricter copyright legislation only increases the volume of illegal use of copyrighted content. That’s what Sweden experienced after IPRED was passed. The file-sharers just switched to the other ways of downloading, where the law couldn’t reach. If we look at France, there are at least three obvious examples of how the users can continue illegal downloading: streaming, cyberlockers, and UseNet.
As it was widely acknowledged, the only thing HADOPI will be able to gain is prosecuting a few users barely understanding what they are doing, while moving advances file-sharers around.

Closure of 73,000 Blogs Discussed on Aussie Radio Show
Of course, it couldn’t remain unnoticed that 73,000 blogs got shut down. The news were everywhere, making international headlines, and recently Australia’s radio show “The Fourth Estate” introduced an interview with Drew Wilson on this issue.
The host of the show approached Wilson to discuss the situation after the reason of closing blogs was confirmed by Burst.net, which said it was terrorist related activity. During 17 minutes appearance he expressed his opinion on the question why the closure of 73,000 individual blogs had such a significant impact all over the globe.
The main issue he highlighted was that because it had happened in the US, there were already some implications when it came to hampering free speech, as it’s a highly valued freedom in the country. In addition, when combined with censorship online, it made a storm of controversy, as free speech is the very core basic freedom making the Internet tick.
Drew Wilson was also asked if this story could set a kind of precedent for the future of the digital world and he argued that it really hadn’t been given that Burst.net was the one pulling the plug on the operations of Blogetery. If it was the FBI that ordered the closure of the website in the first place, it could set a precedent, but it was more an administrative thing than anything else.
It doesn’t mean that Burst.net had been incompetent in any way. Imagine yourself a website admin or a host in the United States, facing the FBI saying that somebody or something under your watch seems to be fueling terrorist activities. What would you do in such stressful situation hearing your government knocking on the door?
On the other hand, it doesn’t justify the threat of censorship online, if you recall the recent news from Italy there the local government is clamping down on bloggers and journalists. And that one does have a chance to set a very bad precedent.
However, the rest of the hosting services and other discussion forums in the country should think over this case and decide what they would do if this happens to them. The incident should be edificatory in some way, and the companies are recommended to take the decisions in its light. Of course, it’s great to consider yourself an advocate of free speech, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the US entities have to operate within the frames of US laws.

µTorrent Web Announced Support of Android and iPad
µTorrent moves forward, making controlling your BitTorrent downloads on the go both more convenient and easier. After BitTorrent Inc. has introduced µTorrent Web supporting iPhone a month ago, other users started to ask it to provide support on similar devices too. Recently the company satisfied their demands and added support for both the iPad and Android platform.
VP of Product Management for BitTorrent Simon Morris said that since having launching µTorrent Web for iPhone, more users had been asking for the similar support on other devices. So, the company was quite excited to answer their demands and soon announced support also for the iPad and Android OS, the list including the Google Ion and Nexus One devices. This means that the users are now able to manage torrents through their web browser on a computer, iPhone, iPad and Android.
Now µTorrent Web offers its users a possibility to control their downloads at any time and from any place they have access to the Internet. Moreover, extra web-enabled mobile devices are able to access the service, thus facilitating the use of application.
This application differs from other web UI designed for BitTorrent client products by the amazing ease of setting it up. In contrast to most of the rest, this one doesn’t require any complicated port-forwarding or confusing settings in the users’ firewall and router. All it needs is to set up login and password in user’s µTorrent 3.0 alpha application, and the client is ready for use.
The brief instruction for those trying to use the client for the first time is the following: go to Options -> Preferences -> Web and choose the option “Enable µTorrent Web Remote Access.” That’s where you need to enter your login and password and go to http://web.utorrent.com. That’s about it!

Facebook Running Aggressive and Confusing Censorship
After Facebook finally managed to solve the bug leading to ban of the word “Palestinian” from page titles, it suddenly appeared to be not their only trouble. The news is that now people can’t use the last name "Arab" for opening accounts, because the system prevents them from doing so.
Recently, Professor Brynen from the Palestinian Refugee ResearchNet made an attempt to create a Facebook page for his group. Surprisingly, he found himself unable to do so, because the system prevented him from it by a rogue moderating process banning the word "Palestinian" from being used in page titles. After being notified about the trouble, Facebook fixed it and even apologized to Rex Brynen, explaining that they use an automated system, which is designed in such a way that it checks for inaccurate registration names. It happened so that for a short period of time, that system was inadvertently applied to Page creation names as well. Facebook moved to fix the bug immediately after getting an alert to this. It’s working properly now and the service apologized for inconveniences it has caused.
However, recently it happened that Facebook's troubles with Arabic names didn't end over there. Facebook's user faced the similar problem when tried to change her account to her married name – "Arab," which is actually a very common Palestinian last name. After the first attempt the service prevented her from doing so.
The interesting thing is that her husband did succeed in using his real last name back in 2007, when signing up for Facebook for the first time. However, after he changed his last name to Arabic script just for fun some time ago, he found himself unable to change it back to the Roman alphabet later. The couple’s family members have tried to sign up for the service and faced the same trouble. Those who try to set up dummy accounts using "Arab" for the last name also ran into exactly the same problem.
Most probably, the nature of the problem is the same as that of the word "Palestinian" – the reason is overzealous automated system. In spite of the fact that Facebook does have a record of passive-aggressive censorship, it can hardly be imagined to be involved in the business of preventing prospective consumers from registering. However, Arab family emailed Facebook a number of times, and still hasn’t got any response.
Of course, it wouldn’t be difficult for the company to fix this problem too, but it shouldn't have been a trouble in the first place.
